NALC Food Drive

National Association of Letter Carriers

spring food drive

May 10, 2008

On this day, letter carriers and volunteers collect food donations from resident's mail boxes. This is the largest food drive of the year for Hoosier Hills Food Bank and keeps the shelves of Hoosier Hills Food Bank's member agencies stocked for the summer. The food raised is very important because summer is a time when children are out of school and can't depend on school breakfasts and lunches.

Letter of thanks from Executive Director, Julio Alonso:

The Hoosier Hills Food Bank would like to thank all those involved in making the 2007 Letter Carrier’s Community Food Drive a huge success.  This year’s food drive raised over 43,000 pounds of food, breaking the previous record and beating last year’s total by almost 10,000 pounds!

The biggest thanks must go to the many city and rural letter carriers who pulled double duty on the day of the food drive, volunteering to collect food left at mailboxes, and to the Community Food Drive Coordinator, Jerry Sutherlin of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 828.

Special thanks also go to the dozens of volunteers who collected food from routes, sorted food at the post offices, and helped with the pre-event efforts, including stapling over 40,000 bags to postcards for postal patrons. Volunteer efforts were supported by several agencies which also helped promote the food drive including; Community Kitchen, The Salvation Army, Area 10 Agency on Aging, Martha’s House, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and White River Community Services.

The food drive would also not have been possible without the help of numerous sponsors and other supporters:  the US Postal Service, Kroger, Smithville Telephone, the Herald-Times, April Sutherlin, Liz Feitl/United Way Community Services, Barry Lessow, B97, White River Central Labor Council, RSVP Program, Sue Owens, City of Bloomington, Mayor Mark Kruzan, Ken Hill, Monroe County Commissioners, Summit Elementary School, Campbell’s, America’s Second Harvest, and the thousands of food donors across our community who placed food out for collection.

The food raised will be available to over 80 food bank member agencies working to provide emergency food assistance to those in need.  Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Julio Alonso, Executive Director
